Practicing Gratitude

The Grass Isn’t Always Greener on the Other Side

Sometimes you can look at someone else’s life and think wow they have it well and that they are very lucky.  However, many times you are only looking at a snapshot of their life, not seeing their entire story.  It is not difficult for on-lookers to judge someone else’s life as easier than their own but this is not always true.  Many people drive fancy cars but have empty bank accounts; some people look slim and trim but suffer from an eating disorder or feel like they are the fattest person in the world.

It is impossible for us to know what is going on in someone else’s mind or know how much effort someone truly puts in to obtaining his or her goals.  This points to the importance of not becoming envious or disillusioned by someone else’s life or accomplishments.  Most people work extremely hard to obtain their goals or buy the things they have.  Many times having their hard work not reap the benefits they expected.  Consequently, causing them to suffer from disappointment too.  However, it is because they persevere in the face of adversity they are able to accomplish many things.  They nurture their talents and abilities by learning from past mistakes and adding to their knowledge as well as skill bank.

Instead of becoming jealous or spiteful of people who appear to have more than what we do, we should take a step back and see their story as a whole.  Jealousy and hate requires too much energy.  Alternatively, try to learn from people who are ahead of you in the game.  Cherish what you have and do not consider how much further you have to go but how far you have come.  This is what is significant and this is what builds character as well as a respectful reputation.

When you know better, you do better and most importantly, you realize how far you have to go.  We will always find that we want or could have more; whether it is a higher income, a bigger house, nicer clothes, a better education there are so many things that could be better.  However, true kindness and love happens when you are content with the things you have; yet, still aspire to improve yourself without becoming disgruntle.
